Global VRLA battery standards for a global telecommunications industry

The current International Standard IEC 60896-2 is reviewed against other standards of similar scope, and known pedigree for application by both battery telecom users and suppliers. To achieve maximum harmonisation of the test and performance characteristics of the standards, a comparison tabulation has been made, and the common features are identified. From this comparison, a new structure for the International Standard is proposed, in which one standard would accommodate 'test methods', and would be managed by 'battery suppliers', and another standard would address 'performance requirements', and would be managed by 'battery users'. In support of this proposal, an overview is given of participation in International Standards work. Detailed information is given on the proposals for the 'performance requirements' standard. This is supported by a summary of user views to date, and case study examples of typical telecom applications. In conclusion, the potential benefits to battery users and suppliers are identified.
