An Actuated Signal Coordination Control Algorithm Based on Data Fusion for Urban Arterials

A short-term level actuated signal coordination control algorithm based on data fusion for urban arterials is established to perform arterial coordination signal control. The architecture of the system enables quick optimization of short-term level at the frequency of 10 seconds. The short-term level control has two main modules. The first module is intended to estimate and predict arrival pattern of vehicles at intersections for different circles by fusing data output from several sub-modules in which loop detector data, probe vehicle data and historical data are processed. The arrival pattern is important to predict vehicle delay which is a critical function in the second module. The second module optimizes arterial signal plans by building an optimization model to minimize total arterial delay. Microscopic simulation using VISSIM shows that the short-term level control algorithm does well in making decisions to decrease average vehicle delay and stops compared with traditional algorithm MULTI-BAND. The algorithm is allowed to achieve good improvement on oversaturated traffic conditions.
