Large-Scale Planar Arrays with Orthogonal Elements for 5G Mobile Terminals

A set of two 1×12 linear antenna arrays, placed orthogonally, designed for operation in the 5G 28 GHz band is presented in this paper. Microstrip patch antenna elements with better than -10 dB return loss from 27.5-28.35 GHz are used for both arrays. A Dolph-Tschebyscheff excitation weighting and optimum spacing are used to achieve a gain of 15 dBi or better over a scanning range of +/- 60° from broadside.
