The I3 System Definition Phase

This chapter presents the business or mission analysis and stakeholder needs and requirements definition processes in ISO/IEC/IEEE Standards 15288 and 12207. The material in the chapter is keyed to the integrated‐iterative‐incremental (I³) system development processes but it can be applied independently or when using system development models other than the I³ model. A case study for a driving system simulator (Realistic Corporation driving system simulator, RC‐DSS) is used to illustrate elements of the system definition (SysDefn) phase of I³ system development. The case study is introduced in “The Realistic Corporation Driving Simulator System”. The technical feasibility of implementing a realistic driving system simulator can be demonstrated by identifying hardware and software elements that could be used to implement these capabilities. Two‐way traceability is essential to trace the correspondences among the outcomes of business analysis, stakeholders' requirements, and system capabilities.
