IEEE Declares General Electric's Silicon-Controlled Rectifier/Thyristor Invention a Milestone [Flyback]

During a special Milestone dedication ceremony at Advanced Atomization Technologies (AA TECH), Clyde, New York, on Friday, 14 June 2019, General Electric’s (GE) silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), the first device in the thyristor family, was designated an IEEE Milestone by IEEE President José M.F. Moura. This was a historic event, since it was the first IEEE Milestone proposed by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS). To mark the invention of the SCR/ thyristor in 1957, IEEE selected its invention site at a former GE facility in Clyde, New York, for the first Milestone dedication ceremony. After the ceremony, a plaque declaring the SCR/thyristor an IEEE Milestone was unveiled at the entrance wall of the AA TECH building by President Moura in the presence of guests attending the ceremony.
