Protecting embedded systems against Class I & Class II cloning attacks using Arduino boards

Embedded systems plays a very important role in the day-to-day life of human beings. There are several applications like automobile, military, medical etc. where embedded systems plays a key hole. For this reason, embedded systems are prone to different types of attacks like invasive, semi invasive and non invasive attacks. Presently, embedded systems rely on cryptographic and similar techniques to protect the system against different types of attacks, which increase hardware overhead as well as system complexity. A major drawback of these complex cryptographic algorithms for increased security is its increased size, cost and power consumption of the system. This paper proposes a novel technique to protect embedded systems against cloning. Theorem of incomplete design is used to make a system secure by replacing a portion of the logic system using a Secured Logic Module (SLM) implemented on an Arduino board, whose functionality depends on the control word stored in a file located in the internet. For a user or intruder, the control word stored in one of the several websites on internet is unknown and for this reason, the logic system is secure against cloning.
