Analysis of Red Sprites in the Middle and High Latitudes of China

In order to further study sprites in the middle and high latitude of China and reveal the relationship between sprite and thunderstorm. This paper introduces the observation experiment conducted in Liaoyuan, Jilin in summer of 2017. The results show that 17 sprite events occurred over a mesoscale convective system (MCS), and 9 sprite events occurred in three relatively small-scale MCSs. Their parent lightning located in the edge of the convective core region and there was no large stratiform cloud precipitation region in MCSs. In addition, all sprites captured are generated by positive cloud-to-ground (CG) strokes.
