A Community Microgrid Control Strategy to Deliver Balancing Services

The balance in real-time between the generated and consumed electricity is fundamentally important to provide uninterruptible power supply. A community microgrid, consisting of several coordinated microgrids, could represent a possible solution delivering balancing services for maintaining safe and resilient operation. In this paper, a new concept of microgrid community is considered and a consequent hierarchical control strategy is proposed. The microgrid community is based on the concept of Virtual Energy District (VED). In particular, in this paper, the authors propose and illustrate the most significant numerical results for a hierarchical control strategy of a VED constituted by several Smart User Networks that are smart DC microgrids aggregated and coordinated in such a way to deliver balancing service when contracted.
