Field test of pedestrian information and communication systems (PICS)

Pedestrian information and communication systems (PICS) have been under development for the purposes to provide the elderly persons and the disabled with the appropriate information for safe, easy, convenient and comfortable movement in a timely manner and consequently to improve quality of their daily lives. Infrared beacons installed around the intersection provide the visually impaired persons with voice information and other persons with text and imagery information. Field tests of these two prototype systems have been conducted for three times to verify their effectiveness and operability. Most of participants evaluated that these systems work very effectively. This paper reports the results of field tests.
