Design considerations for WPT Dynamic charging applications

According to the EV30@30 scenario the number of EVs on the road could be as high as 220 million in 2030. As EV penetration is growing, so does the number of installed charging outlets, but the charge of such amount of vehicles on long road trips can bring a serious problem in case all the static chargers in the stations were busy. An interesting solution to increase the charging opportunities, especially on the road, comes from WPT systems, as these systems can charge the EV batteries without contact even in movement, which is called Dynamic Charging. This concept involves the construction of dedicated charging lanes on the motorways or in high density traffic routes in which the vehicle can be charged at slower speed while moving. Nevertheless, this approach presents some technical drawbacks; for example, the need for a fast ground-vehicle communication to power the emitter coil only when the receiver coil is perfectly aligned or turning of when the receiver coils is leaving. This work proposes the SP_S topology for dynamic charging as it presents a good behaviour against high misalignment, and a new ground-vehicle communication strategy more robust and reliable. The theoretical results have been validated in a 50 kW prototype mounted in a Gulliver electric bus.
