Data Transmission of Zigbee over Fiber

This paper presents a system of ZigBee transmission over optical fiber. The system comprises two parts which are ZigBee network and optical network. The Zigbee network are composed of 2.4 GHz XBee modules (ISM Band) complied to ZigBee standard, consisting of a coordinator and routers. A temperature/humidity sensor is connected to a router to simulate the case where data of a sensor is transmitted over the system. The coordinator is connected to a router via optical network and also, it can still be wirelessly connected to other coordinators and routers simultaneously. As for optical network, there are two optical transmitters (Laser sources) to modulate the electrical signal to optical signal and two optical receivers (Photodiodes) to demodulate the optical signal to electrical signal. The optical network is operated at 1310 nm using single mode fiber (SMF) This creates a bi-directional link of radio over fiber. Then, the data of temperature/humidity from the sensor between the coordinator and router can be transmitted and received over the optical network. Finally, the system performance is tested using XCTU program (A freeware designed for configuration of XBee module). The results show that the data of temperature/humidity sensor can be successfully transmitted using the Zigbee over fiber system. The maximum Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) at 8 kbps is around -70 dBm with the round-trip time of about 100 ms.
