A Decentralized Estimation of the Power System Bus Impedance Matrix Using the Jacobi Iterative Method

Maintaining the reliable operation of complex systems that span a large geographical area, such as power systems, can be a challenge. In the future, the complexity of power systems will increase following the increase in energy production from renewable sources. Renewable sources are much more variable (less controllable) than their conventional counterparts; moreover, an additional source of variability will be the increasing number of prosumers. Maintaining a reliable operation, under such highly variable conditions, will require power systems to be much more flexible. Additionally, the mathematical models used in the analysis of such power systems must be adaptive and be updated with the changes in the operating conditions. This requirement poses a significant challenge. A distributed and decentralized framework offers a practical solution for such a challenge. In this paper, we are proposing an algorithm based on such a framework to evaluate the bus impedance matrix of a power system. The algorithm is based on the Jacobi iterative method for the solution of simultaneous linear equations. The proposed method is applied on the IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 30-bus systems and the results are discussed.
