Parametric Analysis of Tradeoffs Between Transient and Steady-State Loss Reduction for Induction Machines of Different Sizes

Conventional induction machine design generally focuses on steady-state loss reduction under constant rated flux. Transient loss reduction under flux manipulation during torque transients has not been well addressed in the design process in the literature. This paper investigates the design tradeoffs between transient and steady-state loss reduction in terms of induction machine equivalent circuit parameters. The total transient loss is further separated into accumulated steady-state loss and the energy consumption to change the rotor flux state (RFS). The parametric design tradeoffs between transient and steady-state loss reduction are first conducted on a traction size induction machine for torque transients during the UDDS driving cycle. The manipulation of machine equivalent circuit parameters to reduce transient losses without increasing steady-state losses is studied. The design tradeoffs are then conducted for a 3HP induction machine.
