An equivalent winding factor larger than 1 by using flux barriers in the stator

This paper presents the calculation of the winding factor in stators with flux barriers. Those flux barriers help to reduce parasitic harmonics in the air-gap flux density of electrical machines with concentrated windings and further to improve the electromagnetic performance. To adapt these stators to the conventional calculation of the winding factor, the phasor voltage method is used. The results show that with flux barriers an equivalent winding factor larger than 1.00 is possible. The analytical approach is compared to results obtained by FEM. Further to confirm that a higher power density can be achieved with flux barriers, a permanent magnet machine with flux barriers is compared to the same machine without flux barriers.
