Modeling and Simulation of Switched Reluctance Machines for Control and Estimation Tasks

Switched reluctance machines are widely employed in several industrial applications owing to their mechanically robust design and fault tolerance capabilities. However, their inherently high torque ripple and radial vibration limits their application to noise sensitive industrial applications. Control techniques employed for improving this behavior require accurate yet simple mathematical models that capture both the position dependent pulsations in the machine quantities such as flux linkage, electromagnetic torque and radial force. Further, accommodating the effect of magnetic saturation in these models is also crucial for practical applications. An accurate analytical model of the machine, thoroughly validated with finite element analysis and experimental results, that addresses these requirements is presented in this paper. The closed-form nature of this model makes it extremely useful for simulation as well as control and estimation tasks.
