Synchrophasor Based Fault Distance Estimation Method for Tapped Transmission Line

This paper presents synchrophasor based fault distance estimation method for tapped transmission line. The method is based on the calculation of three indices corresponding to three hypothetical fault locations. The results of the presented method is verified by generating diversified fault cases on an existing Indian 400 kV tapped transmission line utilizing PSCAD/EMTDC software platform. The performance evaluation in result section point outs the capability of the suggested method in calculating correct value of location from relaying point to the fault point. It is worth to note that the suggested scheme is applicable to phase and ground faults that occur on tapped transmission line. It provides accurate fault distance estimation results as the error remains well within 0.2 % even with comprehensive variation in fault parameters such as fault type, location of fault and fault resistance.
