Intelligent Vehicles in Urban Traffic – Communication Based Cooperation

One of the major problem in the cities nowadays is the constantly congested road network. In the future new technologies and opportunities will appear to solve this problem. One of the anticipated solutions may be the communication based co-operation of the autonomous driver-less vehicles.In the paper we propose such solution for the efficient control of the intersections in an urban environment. We define suitable communication protocols and algorithms to establish a cooperative intelligent agent organization of self-driving vehicles and traffic controllers.We verify its merits with simulations based on real network models. The results show great improvement in American-like regular urban road networks and also in the irregular European-like intersections in case of the extraordinary traffic situations.
