Improved Detection of a Mobile Radiological Source by Means of a Temporal Radiation Profile

We demonstrate how the detection efficiency of a single sensor can be improved by means of a temporal radiation count-rate profile in a security checkpoint situation (vehicular or pedestrian). In particular, we show improved true positive detection vis-à-vis a traditional method without increasing the false positive rate. Our results are confirmed by both computer and physical experiments in shielded and unshielded scenarios.
