Quran Tajweed Extraction and Segmentation Based on HSV Color Space Model

Tajweed letters in the Quran nowadays often are printed employing many colors. This practise aims at informing the tajweed rules and their readings to their readers. Such a tajweed Quran can be obtained in printed as well as digital form. A digital Quran usually is presented in the form of digital image or video. The research we carried out here is to develop an information technological software that helps users to study tajweed laws and their correct readings autodidactly whether online or real-time. This paper describes one part of the developed system namely tajweed form segmentation and extraction method using the HSV color space. The HSV color space is employed to analyze and determine color characteristics that are used for tajweed letters in the tajweed Quran. Based on color characteristics the segmentation process is done to separate the tajweed letters as objects of interest from non-tajweed objects. Experiments on some tajweed images indicate that tajweed letters can be segmented and extracted perfectly in their original forms.
