Evolution of PRIME to PLC-RF hybrid systems

This paper describes a proposed evolution of PRIME 1.4 (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) from its current state to a version that can support the deployment of hybrid PLC and Radio Frequency (RF) systems. PRIME is an open Standard for Power-line-Related Intelligent Metering Evolution. It is an open, complete and proved specification for a new OFDM-based power line technology for the provision of all kinds of Smart Grid services over electricity distribution networks. PRIME has already been deployed in several countries in tens of millions of units. The new version of PRIME 1.4 includes improvements in security, robustness and use of various PLC channels extending the frequency range used and thus improving communication. Because of this massive deployment we are finding situations where a hybrid PLC-RF system would be convenient to improve the system.
