The Inevitability of an International Regulatory Framework for Artificial Intelligence

AI is impacting humans in ways that have been unheard of. AI applications are now capable of being used in the manufacture and functioning of autonomous weapons, specifically in the Lethal Autonomous Weapons System (LAWS). There is lack of regulation in this regard and in order for any regulatory framework that can be out in place, it is imperative that certain basic principles of control have to be clarified, particularly the principle of `meaningful human control'. This paper attempts to establish the need for an international regulatory framework for artificial intelligence in the context of lethal autonomous weapons systems and meaningful human control.
