Two-Port MIMO Wide-Band Antenna With Two-Port MIMO Reconfigurable Antenna for Cognitive Radio Platforms

A compact four element antenna system has been presented in this paper for cognitive radio application environment. Out of four-element, two are wide-band antennas and another two are reconfigurable antennas. Wide-band antennas act like sensing antennas in the frequency range 2.35-5.9 GHz and reconfigurable antennas having tuning range from 2.6-3.6 GHz act like communicating antennas for spectrum interweave CR. Wide-band antennas and reconfigurable antennas are arranged on the opposite sides of the FR4 substrate. All the antenna elements are planar in architecture and are fabricated on a low-cost FR-4 substrate of dimension 80 mm×80 mm×1.6 mm. The proposed MIMO antenna system exhibit maximum simulated gain of 5 dBi with maximum simulated radiation efficiency of 92%. Both the wide-band antennas are arranged orthogonally for better envelope correlation coefficient (ECC). Similarly, two reconfigurable antennas are also arranged orthogonal to each other for better MIMO performance.
