Sub-THz Dipole Antenna for Future 5G Wireless Communication

Extremely high frequency means extremely fast communication especially if the bands are operating in the millimeter wave or sub-Terahertz (THz) range. 5G communication in the sub-THz links will play a major role in high data rate wireless communication over a distance of few meters. Achieving this task will require high gain and wideband antennas. In this contribution, we present such an antenna design that meets the aforementioned criteria. Firstly around the center sub-THz frequency of 300 GHz, a single dipole antenna element is designed that is backed by a reflector for high gain operation. The conducting materials used is based on Gold offering high conductivity. That antenna achieves a wide impedance bandwidth of 38.6% from 294 GHz to 410 GHz with a gain of 5.14 dBi. Secondly, based on the same dipole structure, optimal directors are introduced to increase the gain while maintaining almost the same bandwidth. The gain achieved is 8.01 dBi. The results accomplished makes the proposed designs viable candidates for high speed and short distance 5G wireless communication systems.
