Exergy Analysis of Centrifugal Filter Used for Marine Engine Lubrication Systems

Purification of lubrication oil is performed by a duplex filter inline and centrifugal back wash filter. The centrifugal back wash filter works on the application of Moment-of-Momentum principle in which the momentum needed for the rotation of the cylindrical chamber is obtained by oil passing through two in number of nozzles attached to the centre rotor. The dirt particles in the oil are separated by the centrifugal forces (generated through nozzles attached to centre rotor) moving to the outer wall of the rotating cylindrical chamber body. In this study the centrifugal filter flow exergy analysis and CFD analysis of nozzles of centrifugal filter is carried out with the ANSIS 13.6 codes. The flow characteristics and the physical behaviours of particles through nozzles have been investigated numerically. For the calculations, a commercial code has been used and the SST k-ω turbulence model has been adopted. In addition, the results from the parameter analysis of the centrifugal filter and the experiments were compared for the verification of the CFD results.
