Analysis and Structural Control of the Offshore Wind Turbine Using a Dynamic Mass Damper Optimized by Genetic Algorithm

In this paper, a method utilized to control the structural response of an offshore wind turbine is proposed. This method used a device called the Dynamic Mass Damper attached to the top of the nacelle to control the structural response of the tower part. The model which is employed to analyze is a NREL 5 MW offshore wind turbine introduced by J. Jonkman et al. (2009) and the monopile foundation of this structure is considered with soil-component. The structural control is focus on dual directions, namely the fore-aft direction and lateral direction under seismic loading excitation. In addition, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is also applied to find out the optimized parameters to show the effectiveness of this structural control system. A MATLAB software code has been developed to compute and simulate this system. The results of simulation showed the effectiveness of this structural control method.
