Sustainable Street Lighting System Design in Libya

The Libyan economy is dominated by the oil and the gas which are considered as the primary energy sources for the generating power plants. Recently, the demand on the energy has grown significantly in Libya. This growth leads in more oil and gas consumption and more CO2 emissions. For these reasons, Libya should create an urgent strategy to use its renewable energy sources to cover some of its load demand. In this paper, a sustainable street lighting system based on reconstruction of existing system is described. In addition to, energy saving method are described and applied. Three scenarios are described: the first scenario study the exist street lighting system. Whereas, the second scenario develops the current system with more rationalization system. The last scenario presents Photovoltaic powered street lighting system. The lamps rating ranges from 250 to 400 watts for the first option and 65 to 100 watts for the last two options. Overall, the results show that the third option is the most energy saving and prevents CO2 emission. Also, replacing the high pressure sodium lamp system with LED lamp system saves 75% of energy and reduces the CO2 emission by 75%. In addition to, inserting the dimmer controller to the system will save 82.5% of energy and reduces the CO2 emission by 82.5%. Furthermore, this study gives benefits to various entities policy makers, investors, and researchers who are working under the solar energy field.
