Improving Power Systems Transient Stability by Coordinated Control of Energy Storage Systems and Synchronous Generators in Presence of Measurement Noise

This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for coordinating the synchronous generators and energy storage systems (ESSs) in order to improve the transient stability in the power systems. A controller is designed using model predictive control that is able to explicitly consider the system model. The controller utilizes multi-input multi-output (MIMO) model of power plant stations in which the control actions are excitation control, turbine governor of synchronous generators, and output power of ESSs. The proposed controller has a fully decentralized structure and is hosted at power plant stations. Each local controller only uses local models and local measurements to solve the control problem, which is a desirable characteristic for practical implementation of the controller. In order to deal with the measurement noises, a sigmoid-function-based tracking differentiator is employed in the proposed controller structure. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of using ESSs for enhancing power system stability.
