Magnetostatic Study of a Dual-Gap MR Valve

The study highlights the concept of a valve for a magnetorheological (MR) damper. The valve configuration that is subject to analysis in the paper utilizes six poles radially distributed with respect to the symmetry axis. The valve features two parallel flow paths for improved dynamic range (turnup ratio). The author reveals the results of finite-element field calculations for such piston configuration. As the calculations were performed, flux density maps at various levels of the excitation, averaged flux density characteristics, flux linkage and coil inductance were extracted from the obtained data and analyzed in detail.
