Steerable Bifocal Lens-Array Antenna at 57-64 GHz

The Steerable Bifocal Lens-Array Antenna (SB-LAA) of the millimeter wave range 57-64 GHz, with 2D beam-steering capability is described. The physical effects allowing the developed antenna to focus and direct the main beam are considered. The results of calculating the bifocal profile of the lens, performed in the approximation of geometric optics, are presented. The characteristics of the SB-LAA were evaluated by direct electromagnetic simulations. Experimental studies of the SB-LAA prototype characteristics were carried out. The results demonstrate that the developed antenna system can be used for high speed data transmission (flexible backhauling) between small-cell base stations and network nodes of modern cellular systems at distances up to 100-300 meters.
