Characterization of biomass solid wastes for bio-fuel production in Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam aims to achieve at least 10% of energy generation from renewable resources by the year 2035 to reduce the impact of climate change and reliance on fossil fuel reserves. Brunei with its vast number of rainforests and rising agriculture sector should take advantage of utilizing biomass solid wastes as an alternative energy source. In addition, with the growth of population, there is a rise of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated creating disposal and pollution problems. Pyrolysis has been known as an effective method to convert biomass solid wastes into bio-fuels which can be used as alternative fuels or value-added products. The characterization study of the biomass solid wastes is an important step to assess the properties of the feedstock. This allows for the selection of the suitable feedstock pyrolysis system and for the proper pyrolysis system design. In this paper, selective characterization investigations have been conducted on saw dust, poultry waste and waste tyre. The characterization study includes the determination of physical properties (particle size and bulk density), proximate analysis (moisture content, ash content, volatile matter and fixed carbon), Higher Heating Value and elemental analysis Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur content, (CHNOS) analysis.
