Dielectric and Thermal Properties of PTFE/CaCu3Ti4O12(CCTO) Nanocomposites

The development of polymer-ceramic composites as new materials for high voltage capacitors is one of the thrust areas of power research. In this connection, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based composites with a high dielectric constant-CaCu₃Ti₄O₁₂(CCTO) nanoceramics were prepared in different weight% and characterized for their dielectric and thermal behavior. X-ray diffraction studies of these nanocomposites indicated the presence of peaks corresponding to both PTFE and CCTO at varying intensities which depend on the loading of CCTO. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the melting point of the prepared nanocomposites is lower than that of PTFE by about 2°C. From thermo gravimetric analysis, all the nanocomposites were found to be stable up to 500°C. Dielectric studies at room temperature showed that the permittivity of these nanocomposites was not changed significantly with frequency in the range 100 Hz-1 MHz. They also found to exhibit low dielectric loss (<;0.007) at 10 kHz. These nanocomposites can be further developed for their application in high voltage capacitors.
