Dynamic phasor based modelling of hybrid FC-PV module for microgrid application

This paper presents a modeling of dynamic phasor (DP) based grid connected hybrid system which includes photovoltaic (PV) array and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. The fuel cell (FC) can be represented mathematically as state space model in terms of partial pressures of hydrogen, oxygen and water. Thermodynamic voltage of FC can be obtained from this state space model and reducing the concentration, activation and ohmic losses from thermodynamic voltage, output voltage of FC can be then acquired. Dynamic model of PV array can be achieved as linear equations of diode current, photo current, reverse saturation current and shunt current as functions of irradiation and PV stack temperature. The output voltage of PV can be obtained by linearly solving current equations. A continuous maximum power output has been obtained using maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. This paper presents DP based modeling of FC and PV module and also simulate hybrid 1.5 kW FC-PV module in grid connected mode using MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. By comparison of output voltage and active power in both time domain (TD) and DP domain, it is acknowledged that DP based modeling technique is capable to deal with harmonics very effectively as compared to TD based modeling technique which further justifies DP theory.
