Challenges in Reliable Power System Planning and Management with Large Scale Infusion of Renewable Sources in India

India has been continuously thriving to augment its renewable energy base to 175 GW across the overall energy spectrum from currently installed capacity of 60.17 MW by 2022, with 100 GW of solar, 60 GW of wind, 10 GW of bioenergy and 5 GW of small hydro. Since India is getting transformed from a power deficit nation to a power surplus nation, it needs to thoroughly look into how major portion of these inherently unpredictable (or non-dispatch able) sources can be integrated into the electric system without compromising stability, safe operations and security of grid. This paper discusses the challenges involved in planning and management of Indian power system which is currently dominated by conventional energy sources, with large scale infusion of renewable sources which is currently dominated by conventional energy sources. This paper also suggests possible solutions for managing the variability of these non-dispatch able renewable sources.
