Impact of Socio-Economic and Psychological Factors on the Development of Fiber Optic Communication Systems

The article is devoted to the analysis of non-technical factors affecting the development of fiber-optic communication systems. It discusses the role of socio-economic factors in stimulating a new round of technical development of communication systems in the late 2000s and the emergence of coherent systems. Author analyses the stages of development of coherent systems in the second decade of the XXI century and reveals the influence of psychological factors on the emergence of a new class of coherent systems using two optical carriers. It is shown that the choice of a technical solution using two carriers was caused, first of all, not by the internal logic of technology development, but by the marketing need to accelerate the achievement of a psychologically significant transmission speed of 400 Gbps.
