The Role and Significance of Geographical Indication for Sustainability of Cashmere Industry

Traditional cashmere manufacturing is undergoing a paradigm shift in India. The current practices are not sustainable due to the lack of standards and controls. In this ethnographic case study, an attempt is made to explore and gain deep insights on the use of technological aspects in traditional cashmere processes. A theoretical framework based on Geographical Indication is developed to capture multidimensional facets associated with cashmere industry. The proposed model encourages standard industry practices and paves a way forward to mitigate variations susceptible to the traditional craft.
