Impact of Building’s Orientation and Insulation on Energy Consumption : Case Study in Different Thermal Zones of Morrocco using TRNSYS Software

The heating and cooling requirements in buildings are generally dependent on weather conditions and on different characteristics of the envelope, and in second place on occupant behavior. The purpose of this work is to study some parameters of the envelope such as orientation and insulation and evaluate their impact on energy consumption. Using TRNSYS, a series of 40 simulations was conducted to acquire building energy consumption data for four orientations and two R-values of walls, roof, and windows of a small building model in different climatic zones of Morocco. The results show that the building orientation has a very important role in reducing the total load and affects the profitability of insulation. Furthermore, the optimal orientation varies according to each climatic zone.
