Array Pattern Correction in Presence of Antenna Failures using Metaheuristic Optimization Algorithms

A novel method Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Chaotic Whale Optimization Algorithm (CWOA) are proposed for failure correction of linear antenna array and studied with respect to their efficiency and convergence. The presence of erroneous elements in linear array accounts for the degradation of performance in the form of reduction in gain, broadening of beam and increased side lobe level. In this paper, WOA and CWOA algorithms are applied for the first time for failure correction. The synthesis involves a priori knowledge of failed elements by assigning null weight of amplitude excitation to faulty array elements at different positions. Array pattern synthesis for optimum side lobe level is demonstrated for 2-element and 3-element failure conditions. Performance comparison of proposed algorithms is presented.
