Improvement of performances of a switched reluctance machine by adding a floating switched capacitor

Switched reluctance machine has many advantages in both its simple structure and the wide speed range at which it can operate. Nerveless, one of its main flaws is its poor power factor especially in high speed, which leads to over-sizing of the power supply. The purpose of this article is to show the impact of an electronic impedance based on a "Floating Switched Capacitor (FSC)" on the performance of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) controlled via a voltage inverter. Time simulations carried out with Psim™ software show that by associating this device with the machine, the dynamics of growth and decay of the magnetizing current is improved, which in other words improves the power factor. Thus, the machine is able to provide more torque on all of its operating points.
