Using Polar Codes in NOMA-Enabled Visible Light Communication Systems

Visible light communication (VLC) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are two promising technologies in next-generation wireless communication systems due to their capabilities to achieve high spectral efficiency and massive connectivity. Among various yet-to-tackle technical challenges, how to improve reliability and how to reduce complexity of designing these technologies are the focus of this article. To that end, a low-complexity polarization coding scheme is exploited into the binary signal before it is transmitted in NOMA-enabled VLC systems. A decoding algorithm for successive cancellation decoder and successive interference cancellation is proposed to decode the received signal. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme is superior to other benchmark schemes in terms of the block error rate.
