Application of Genetic Algorithm for Placement of AIS (Automatic Identification System) Base Station

The increased sea transportation activity resulted in the occurrence of accidents such as ship fires, ship collision and shipwrecked. Mostly, the accidents are the result of lack information and incorrect instruction given by port. Therefore, special attention should be given to the vessel's safety systems to reduce casualties and other losses. Integrated AIS (Automatic Identification System) technology with VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) will result in a safe navigation system on marine transportation. In this paper, we aim to design the placement of AIS base station using the genetic algorithm along the coastal island of northern Java is conducted. The goal of the genetic algorithm presented in this research is to maximize the coverage area and minimize the number of base station. It is shown that, by using the selected genetic algorithm parameters, it is possible to specify the AIS base station locations and the coverage in terms of traffic and area. The optimization using genetic algorithm successfully obtained total coverage area which can reach up to 86 % coastal island of northern part of Java starting from port of Tanjung Perak Surabaya, East Java to coastal area of Cilegon, West Java with 688 km of 800 km total length of the northern island of Java can be covered by AIS base station.
