Simulating the Impact of E-Mobility Charging Infrastructure on Urban Low-Voltage Networks

Driven by subsidies, the Volkswagen emission scandal, the discussion on driving bans for diesel cars as well as decreasing prices for electric vehicles, their number in Germany is expected to grow significantly over the next years. Especially private charging infrastructure is often connected to low voltage networks. With charging power of up to 22kW per wallbox it could become a challenge especially for urban and suburban low voltage networks. This paper presents an approach to simulate the impact of charging infrastructure using a stochastic charging profile generator and time series load flow analysis. Exemplary simulations are carried out on real low voltage networks incorporating measurement data from these grids. The results indicate which penetration of charging infrastructure can be integrated in the networks without triggering grid reinforcements dependent on the charging power.
