Mutual Decoupling of Four-Element Transmit- Receive (T-R) Antenna Arrays Based on a Metamaterial Isolation Structure

An isolation-enhanced transmit-receive (T-R) antenna array with 2 × 2 patch elements is proposed based on metamaterial structure. Due to the resonant properties of metamaterial, the isolation structure can provide a high impedance characteristic to prevent the leakage of electromagnetic waves between the transmitting device and receiving equipment. Two columns of metamaterials are placed in the middle of the antenna array and the decoupling effect is verified by HFSS simulation. The antenna array operates at 6.19-GHz and has an isolation enhancement of about 30 dB after decoupling. The antenna can be used the radar system to enhance performance by reducing the TX-to-RX leakage.
