Screen Wash Pump Power System Study–An Industrial Project for Hines Energy Complex

According to national fire protection association (NFPA), any modifications of electrical equipment, leading to the data change on the label, will require updated power system study including arc flash risk analysis. In 2016, Phasor Engineering provided a full arc flash hazard assessment for Hines Energy Complex, Power Block 1, that belongs to Duke Energy. After the completion of this project, a screen wash pump was added to the system. Per the request of Duke Energy, Phasor Engineering performed an updated power system study to consider the added load. In this paper, we present the highlights of the second phase of this industrial project in order to analyze the outcomes of 1) load flow, 2) short-circuit, 3) protection coordination, and 4) arc flash studies. Taking into account the added pump, based on the provided simulation results, a recommendation was given to Duke Energy by Phasor Engineering which will be discussed. The electrical model of the power plant is developed and analyzed using Electrical Transient & Analysis Program (ETAP) software, version 14.1.
