IoT and Animal Care: A Potential Application in Elephant Musth and Goat Estrus

Animals play an extremely significant role in our lives today. IOT (Internet of Things) is an emerging technology. which has all together changed the mode and approach of interacting, communicating and connecting with the world. This paper proposes the scope of employing smart computing in animals. In the proposed paper, two variant animal state possibilities are considered: Elephant Musth and Goat Estrus. `Musth' is a periodic situation in male elephants, marked by very much hostile behavior due to a very high level of ascends in reproductive hormones. Detection of `estrus' in goats will help the farmers to impart artificial insemination and thus run a profitable business. Via this paper, we would like to put forward an IOT based mechanism that includes modules for detecting the state under observation of the animals and delivering proper messages to the stakeholders through the system. The system uses sensors to detect the factors under investigation and a conversion module to convert the data to required mode. It also has an analysis and message generation module for proper detection and a subsystem to send messages to stakeholders. The foreseen output of the work that we propose here could be deemed to be a life saving one as it ensures a Musth fear-free society. The work will also render great support to small scale goat breeders in detecting silent heat in female goats which in turn provides great financial help to the poor farmer.
