A novel solution for the CFO induced interference in Device-to-Device (D2D) communication system using cognitive radio

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is a promising way to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless networks. However, the deployment of D2D links need to address many challenging issues in the context of fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems, where the number of connected devices are likely to be huge. In this paper, we explore the performance of D2D communication in the context of cognitive radio scenario. The spectral leakage from the cognitive D2D users and achievable bit error rate (BER) of the primary user (PU) are the parameters used for performance analysis. As D2D systems typically use inexpensive local oscillators, the performance of such systems in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO) is studied using transmission schemes such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) transmissions. Simulation studies show that the performance of the PU is improved as the cognitive D2D users employ UFMC technology rather than OFDM in the presence of CFO.
