Experimental and Numerical Study on the Magnetization Process of Roebel Cable Segments

REBCO-based high temperature superconductor (HTS) cable conductors, due to its large transport current, are crucial for the requirement of large-scale applications, such as accelerator magnets, fusion magnets, and superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) systems. One key characteristic of these conductors is their electromagnetic response under alternating external magnetic field. Test samples of a 10-strand REBCO-based Roebel cable were studied both, experimentally and numerically. Samples were magnetized without transport current at 77 K by ramping up and down the external magnetic field. The remnant fields (screening current field) after the removal of external fields were mapped using a scanning Hall probe with fixed distance (1–5.5 mm) above the sample surface. formulation with thin strip approximation. The experiment results and simulation solutions showed good agreements, which confirmed the validity of the numerical model, as well as provided us with a better understanding of the magnetization process and remnant field characteristics of Roebel cable.
