Transient Simulation and Recovery Time of a Three-Phase Concentric HTS Cable

In this paper, we investigate by means of transient simulations a three-phase high-temperature superconducting cable similar to the AmpaCity project under fault conditions. The objective is to investigate if the increase of temperature during the fault period may result in permanent damage to the cable. We consider a three phase to the ground fault situation. A two-dimensional computational heat transfer analysis is carried out to simulate the transient thermal behavior of the cable. The result shows that the cable may return to operation after about 20 s. The recovery time of the coolant is about 8 h.
