Impact of Motion Measurement Errors on the Multistatic Radar Resolution Ellipse

We consider the impact of radar motion measurement errors on the multistatic resolution ellipse (MRE), which has been proposed as a multistatic synthetic aperture radar image quality metric. Position, velocity, and/or acceleration uncertainty of the transmitter(s) and/or receivers(s) may result in multistatic images with mainlobe bifurcation or blurring. We discuss the MREs utility as a resolution measure and show that, in cases of large uncertainty, the MRE alone is insufficient to describe the underlying phenomena apparent in the multistatic radar image point spread function.
