An On-Body Matched Planar Inverted-F Antenna for Biotelemetry System

In this study, an on-body Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) has been designed for biomedical purposes operated in Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) (401-406MHz) band. The primary reasons behind choosing MICS band are its only application is found in medical sector due to its world wide availability, acceptable propagation and characteristics. The main features of this antenna are its minimized sized compare than recent on-body biomedical antennas. The total dimension of this antenna is 29mm×29mm×1.04mm. In order to make this antenna bio medically suitable for use on human tissues; the antenna has mounted on different human tissue models where proper electrical properties of human muscles has been maintained. The antenna is suitable for real time monitoring for different types of disease related to human skin, muscle, brain, breast etc. Towards making this antenna more bio-compatible and improving its performance an additional Silicon layer has been used. As this antenna is designed for biomedical application, it needs to be harmless to human tissue for which it's SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) is needed to be below the restricted limit by Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This measurement has also kept in mind during the design. Finally this antenna has been simulated on different human body models by using Computer Simulation Technology (CST).
