According to an NBC News report, the U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration was forced to take its Satellite Data Information System offline in September 2014, following an apparent hacking incident affecting its ground based computer network. As a result, weather agencies around the world could not receive the necessary forecasting data for 48 hours. At the recent Black Hat information security conference in Las Vegas, Ruben Santamarta, a researcher for the company IOActive, raised the specter of hacking the space-based satellite system itself to launch "microwave -like attacks."
